Chapter 14

Later that day, Beech strolled into my office like he owned the place. To be honest, it was actually pretty annoying. What if I had been in an interview with a client? What if I had been on a private call? He hadn’t even knocked first.

“Hey,” he said, tossing one of his folders onto my desk. I recognized it as one he had been looking at back at my place before Eric had interrupted us. “That’s a file on Daniel Bond.”

I picked it up, leaning in my chair. “Question,” I said, flipping it open. “Did Daniel Bond have access to Rohypnol?”

He furrowed his brow, leaning forward. “Why?”

“I got a call from Angelina Scarlett earlier today,” I said. “The results of my… of my kit came back. That was the drug they found in my system.”

Beech sat back. It was almost like he needed to process that the drug was in my system at all. Instead of flipping through Bond’s file like I intended to, I sat back and watched him, trying to gage what he was feeling. Anger flickered across his face. I could tell by the way his lips thinned, his eyes narrowed, and the skin around his cheeks were tight. But he was also calm, curious. His nostrils were flared. He was trying to control his temper. He wanted to make sense of things.

“Yeah,” he finally said, scratching underneath his chin. “Bond did have access to the drug. It’s in his file. He’s one of the SRO’s, and he happened to catch a couple of students with it three weeks ago, just before Irvine participated in homecoming.”

“Homecoming?” I asked. “Is that still a thing?”

“Reminiscing about the good ol’ days?” Beech asked, his lips curling up into a grin.

“Hey, they aren’t old just yet,” I said. “I’m only twenty-seven. My ten-year reunion is in two years. What about you, old man? You preparing for your twentieth?”

“Oh, ouch.” He put his hand over his heart. “Anyway, as a school resource office, Bond did have access to the drug. Then again, so did the other SRO’s. In fact, I’m sure the special victim detectives also had access to it. I’m sure it’s been tagged in property. Anyone could have grabbed it.”

“Is there a way we can see if any of the ones in evidence is missing?” I asked.

“You think that maybe whoever did what happened to you, stole it from property?”

I nodded my head. “If it’s Bond, I highly doubt he’d be stupid enough to turn in the evidence and go back for it later,” I pointed out. “But if it’s not him, if it’s Swanson, he could have checked out the evidence. At least he could have stolen it.”

“Another stupid move,” Beech said. “But, it’s not like our detectives are the brightest. Do you know how much shit gets kicked back from records because they can’t even write their reports correctly?”

I raised my brow. I believed it. The officers meant well, of course, but they weren’t perfect. One mistake could get an entire case thrown out.
