By the time I finish with therapy, I step outside into the refreshing night air. That familiar chill, the same as earlier, creeps up my spine, giving me the sensation of being watched. Once again, I glance around, concluding that I’m losing my mind. Adjusting the strap of my black handbag on my shoulder, I take a step forward.

Should I take the subway or get a taxi?

A car pulls up in front of me, and my heart rate spikes. Due to the anxiety rushing to my throat, it takes twice as long to recognize it, but when I do, a wave of relief washes over me.

Denzel.

Despite telling Ace I can manage on my own, I’m secretly grateful he arranged for Denzel to give me a ride. I swiftly climb into the back seat, shutting the door behind me, stealing one last glance at my surroundings.

And that’s when I spot it—a shadow lurking near the side of the building, blending seamlessly with the darkness.

“Everything alright?” Denzel asks.

I jump at the sound of his voice, and when I turn to look back at where I saw the shadowy figure, it has vanished.

What is wrong with me?

“Calla?” Denzel calls out, concerned.

I shake off my unease. “Yeah. Yeah, everything is fine.”

Denzel continues to look at me through the rearview mirror for a moment longer, disbelief veiling his deep-set eyes. He chooses not to press further. Instead, he gives a slight nod and focuses on the road, shifting the car into drive.

When I return to the apartment, I find Ace already there, his phone pressed to his ear.

“I’ll talk to you later.” He ends the call when he notices me.

“You didn’t come to therapy,” I mention without accusing him, without questioning why he wasn’t there. I want to give him the chance to explain himself without prying it out of him.

“Sorry,” he replies. “I don’t think I can do it at the moment. Not with the trial and Ellie. And the fight coming up.”

I nod. “I understand.”

He looks at me with an apology swirling in eyes. He comes closer and cups my cheeks in his large hands. “I’m sorry. And I promise once everything settles down, I’ll come to therapy as much as you need me to.”

“Okay.”

“I mean it, Calla.”

“I’m not mad,” I say.

“You’re not? I know how much it means to you.”

“It’s not what’s important right now. There are bigger things at play.”

Ace nods and takes a step back.

I swallow. I can see how Ace shuts down in front of me, and I hate it. I hate how easily he slides that mask over his face, trying to hide his emotions from me. Even though he doesn’t fully succeed, I hate that he tries at all.

Talk to me.

Tell me how you feel.

We’re meant to be a team.

I’m here for you.

Please don’t push me away.

It’s only the gist of what I want to say, but when I open my mouth, words evade me, and the night slips away.
