Weanling

By weaning time at four to six months of age, the horse has reached the human physical equivalent of a four-to-five-year-old child and the mental equivalent of a two-to-three-year-old. With a short attention span and unpredictable outbursts, weanlings are best left to be horses, with lots of turnout time.

Lessons should be frequent, short, safe, and fun. The weanling can experience deep mental and physical trauma and is very impressionable, so harsh handling is never appropriate. Care must be taken to preserve the weanling’s interest in eating and other routines so that he does not become depressed. The young horse separated from his mother is uncertain about his safety. In addition, he must rely totally on his own behavior patterns for the first time. If he is out on pasture, he must decide when and where to graze, drink, and find salt. If he is in a pen or stall, he must approach a new feeder or water trough on his own, without reassurance from his dam. Appropriate nutrition and health care are essential during this peak growing period.
