Chapter 12

It took all of Jackson’s resolve not to spend the entire day staring at Mia. She looked good in denim. Her dark braids rested on her collarbone and the cowboy hat sat a little too low on her forehead. Jackson wanted to lift it up but thought it best not to.

Mia was a natural cowgirl. She didn’t squirm away when he showed her how to milk a cow. She didn’t even bat an eyelid when a squirt of milk splashed out of the pail and hit her white shirt.

She wasn’t afraid to get her hands dirty either; getting down on her knees to hold up a broken gate while Jackson fixed one of the hinges.

His horse even took a shine to her and kept nudging her back with its nose.

“Want to take a ride?” Jackson asked, holding out his hand. Mia looked up at him with a grin, her upper lip shiny with perspiration.

This could not be the same woman as the one in the pizzeria, Jackson thought. At the ranch, she was playful and relaxed. It was as if her memory of the night before had been wiped from her mind.

She took his hand and his heart skipped a beat.

“I’ve never been on a horse before,” Mia said. She stuck a foot in the stirrup and placed her hand on Jackson’s shoulder. He tensed as her nails grazed him and his wounds throbbed. He couldn’t forget about last night. And the promise he had made to keep her safe.

As Jackson lifted Mia up onto the saddle, his mind was racing. What if David’s plan didn’t work? Maybe Mia would have to stay with him on the ranch forever. That wouldn’t be so bad. But what if the assailants knew who he was? Then there would be no more places to hide.

Mia’s laugh brought him back to the moment and he smiled, casting his worries aside. Right now, they were going to take a ride in the country, and they were perfectly safe. Nothing could go wrong.

“I feel like I’m sitting on top of a wobbly mountain,” Mia said through a hearty laugh. “I’m slipping.”

Jackson mounted his horse and joined Mia, who had the roping reins in a death grip.

“Relax, we’ll take this nice and slow. Now, if you look out at the countryside and stop looking at the ground, you’ll feel a lot better.” He gave Mia a reassuring nod, and he watched her lift her eyes to look out at the scenery. Her shoulders relaxed a little and she exhaled. Satisfied that she was not slipping, Jackson headed for a line of trees. The blazing sunshine made everything appear yellow in a haze that burned the green out of the grass. Jackson pulled out his flask and offered it to Mia.

“Take this, it’s easy to dehydrate out here,” he said. Mia fumbled with the reigns and fisted them in one hand as she shakily took the flask.

“Thanks,” she said, then took a swig. The two of them settled into silence, listening to the birds chirping and his brothers’ distant laughter.
