If you answer ânoâ to these questions, then the problem is unfixable, and your best option to avoid conflict would be to support the patient when deferring to the patient-centered approach, or to the family when deferring to the family-centered approach. If you answer âyesâ to these questions, then the problem is fixable. If so, you should then implement communication skills that include facilitation, negotiation, and understanding of multiple perspectives as a way to achieve a mutual definition of the area of conflict. Once you have explored your own emotions, you might begin by describing them (without displaying them) to the opposing party. Sometimes emotions are the direct cause of the conflict rather than the conflict itself, so if you describe your emotions, this may serve as an immediate form of resolution. If the conflict merits further exploration into negotiation, listen to the patientâs reasoning, and then try to offer some type of alternative solution, such as referring them to a second opinion or independent broker (as mentioned in Chapter 3). For patients and families, a second opinion may be another doctor, psychiatrist, counselor, or other health care professional. A second opinion allows the opposing party the chance to corroborate or refute your position. While it may seem like questioning of your judgment, you are playing the important role of facilitator to help the patient achieve perspective on the conflict. It is also a means of taking the necessary steps required for one or more parties to change in order to resolve the conflict. If you do decide to offer a second opinion, do not allow the opposing party to push you far from what you believe to be true, especially if you trust your clinical assessment of the conflict. Your purpose in approaching conflict is to provide options available in response to an impasse.
