CHAPTER 15

“I’m going to my cabin to look at this video,” Sadie declared. “Do you want to come with me, or do you want me to take you to your cabin so you can check on Hunky Husband?”

Lacy waved her off. “I can find my own way.”

“I just watched a man flush birdseed out of your ear while you kicked your legs like a cartoon rabbit, so I’m not taking any chances on letting you wander this ship.”

Lacy sighed. “Yeah, I told you this wouldn’t work.” She motioned to the bikini. “I’m not really the seductress type. I’m more the birdseed-on-the-eardrum type.”

“That’s your problem,” Sadie said.

“Rogue birdseed? I know, they told me.”

“No, not birdseed. It’s the attitude. You’ve got all the right equipment.” She paused to flick her fingers at Lacy, encompassing the length of her. “You don’t know how to sell it. It’s all about the attitude. Between the face and hair and body, you could own this ship.”

“All I want is to be with my husband and not have him throw up.” She frowned. “That came out wrong. You know what I mean.”

Sadie chuckled and gave Lacy’s shoulders a squeeze. “Yeah, I do. I’m sorry your honeymoon has been a bust so far, but there are a lot of days left. It’ll turn out okay, you’ll see.”

Somehow when Sadie said it, with so much authority, Lacy believed her, and something inside her lightened a bit.

“So, are you coming with me or going to your room?” Sadie prodded.

Something on deck caught Lacy’s attention, and she paused. “I think…I think I want to do that.” She pointed.

Sadie followed the line of her gaze and saw a surfing simulator. “Really? Somehow that doesn’t look like your scene.”

“It’s not, but that’s kind of the point. I promised Jason I would do something adventurous today, something outside the box, and I don’t think he’ll accept forced birdseed flushing as an answer.”

“Okay,” Sadie said.

Lacy blinked at her. “You’re going to let me, just like that?”

“Was I not supposed to?” Sadie said.

“Usually when I say I want to do dangerous things, people try to talk me out of it,” Lacy said.

“I figure you’re an adult who knows her own mind and capabilities, so…” Sadie shrugged, nodding toward the surfing machine.

“Huh,” Lacy said. Now she wasn’t certain she wanted to do it. Without the resistance of someone actively trying to prevent harm, she saw the danger for herself. She had trouble staying upright on a flat surface; should she really be trying to balance herself in moving water on a small board? On the other hand, she had promised Jason she would find an adventure. The boat only offered so much, and he would undoubtedly be pleased and surprised if she told him she sucked up her courage and tried surfing. “Okay, I’m going to do it,” she declared.

“Super. Looks like there’s a bit of a line. I’ll go peruse this and come back for you.”

“Okay,” Lacy said, nodding distractedly as she headed toward the line.

The first thing she noticed was her age, at least ten years older than everyone else ahead of her.
