Chapter Six

“A woman? Are you serious?”

Sergeant Matthews, whom I’d spoken to on the

phone earlier, paced his office at the Maroocydore police

station.

“A woman. Where the hell did you get an idea like

that?”

“I dunno. Call it instinct…call it…wait. That tracker.

The one who said he sensed anger at the crime scene.”

“Willie,” the sergeant grunted. “Yeah.”

“Ask him. Ask him what he thinks.”

The sergeant’s shoulders dropped. “He suggested the

same thing. Even went as far as saying a fat woman be-

cause her feet were bigger. He said her feet were huge and

she was heavy.”

“His mother?” Rongo frowned. “A friend?”

“A girlfriend…wife?” Matthews paled. “Holy heck

there are some sick people in this world.”

We fell silent. I felt like all three of us were trying to pro-

cess the idea that a fat woman helped a skinny man abduct

and do very bad things to a beautiful little girl.

“We’re assuming a lot,” Rongo said. “Have either of the

victims mentioned a woman?”

“No,” Matthews said. “But then, neither of them men-

tioned the dog either. Ellen’s boyfriend mentioned it to

Dean here. Thank you for questioning him, by the way. We

would have gotten to him, but we had some fresh leads on

the car and well…we’re doing our best.”

“You’re doing a great job,” I said.

He sighed. “When we questioned the women again,

both of them said they remembered the dog, but Hayley

said the dog was kinda dirtylooking but subdued, She

didn’t mention the dog the first time we spoke to her.”

Matthews picked up a file from his desk. “Ellen didn’t

see the dog, but does remember the barking. I think they

were both very rattled by their encounters with this guy.

We found dog hairs on the rug the perpetrator brought to

the crime scene and on Shani’s clothing. Still waiting to

hear back on what type of dog it might be.”

“You said you had some leads on the vehicle. Have

there been other reports of it in the area?” I asked.

Matthews studied me for a moment.

“Yes, there have.” He blew out a sigh. “We got a report

that this vehicle was outside a motel in Mooloolaba. It’s a

little south of here, but it’s still an area that’s kind of re-

vamping so the motels there give better deals.”

“A traveling man,” I said.

He nodded. “He was there one night. Paid cash, signed

a name, it could be real, maybe not.”

“What name?”

“Bob Smith.”

“Not,” Rongo and I said in unison.

“He cleared out, apparently, first thing Sunday.”

“Are you working on fingerprints?”

He nodded.

“Did they get his license plate?”

He ignored the question. “We’ve had other reports of

the vehicle further inland—”

“Near the forest?”

He lifted his shoulders. “Roughly near it.”

“I bet he’s still close, but he’s hiding. It’s rugged terrain

there. Are there a lot of rental homes available inland?”

“Well, yeah, sure. This is a tourist Mecca.”

“I bet he wants to stay in the area, but he may switch

license plates.”

“He may already have. A guy reported his plates stolen

in Toowoomba. He said he saw a white Commodore except

he didn’t see a blue trim.”

Rongo whistled. “If it’s him, maybe he painted over it.”

“Toowoomba. That’s near the forest, isn’t it?” I asked.

Matthews nodded.

“You need to contact all the realtors in the area.
