Once you’ve laid a 12" x 36" section of thin-set, position the tiles in place. Start by laying the sheets where they’re supposed to go, and then drop in the little slivers and half-tiles once you’ve situated the big sections. Now, use your grout float to “tamp down” the tile. “Tamp down” is contractor for “gently but firmly press.” Don’t push so hard that it squeezes all of the thin-set out from under the tiles, but press firmly enough that you see some thin-set squeeze between the tiles. Just a little. If you lay your first tiles and tamp them down and a huge amount of thin-set squeezes out between the tiles, you’ve either put down too much thin-set or you’re pressing too hard. Ideally you want the thin-set to squeeze up so that half the thickness of the tile is submerged in thin-set and the other half is still visible.

At this point, you just complete and repeat, section after section, until you’ve tiled your way out of the bathroom again. Don’t forget to wipe up areas of obvious excess with a damp sponge or paper towel, and if you get any on the adjacent tile walls, wipe that off too. Do this as you go rather than trying to clean it all up by dangling yourself from the doorway once all of the tile is installed.

Now you’re going to have to wait overnight again, so rinse your tools off in your kitchen sink, pee at your neighbor’s house, and go to bed.
