CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR

This was the first time I was alone with River. Freya was right in calling me a sperm donor. I had not done a thing in River’s life to earn me the title of father, least of all him calling me Dad.

As my shock wore off, I realized that every part of me yearned to know him. I was in a race against time, trying to keep calm and make up for the sixteen years missed of his life in two days.

“Thank you for coming,” I let him know as I drove us down to Emma’s.

Even though my house was big, it didn’t offer the privacy we needed to hash things out. His aunt was nearby, Max and Freya had been over most of the day, and Juliet had finally shown up as well. It was chaos.

I almost felt bad for River. He seemed overwhelmed by my siblings.

“Like I had a choice,” he snorted.

I slammed the brakes without thinking.

“The fuck,” he hissed.

“If you want me to take you back, just say the word.” I turned to look at him. He looked bewildered by my statement. “I don’t want you to feel like you don’t have a choice in things that impact your future.”

River wasn’t speaking; he was just glaring.

‘‘I know your aunt brought you here, but if you’d rather not know me at this moment in time, I will respect that. If you decide you can’t do this now, I won’t hold it against you.”

River audibly swallowed.

“Just keep going. We’re already out anyways,” he muttered.

His response made me grin. And there was also a sense of relief that he was okay with getting to know me.

“Do you play sports?”

“No.”

“Do you like politics?”

“Fuck no.”

Well, this wasn’t going well.

“I played football in high school but was never good enough to play in college. You know Quincy Hardwell? He went to school here.”

“I know,” he quipped.

Teenagers were a fucking delight. I might have been put off or dissuaded by him if I had not dealt with Jess’s bullshit already.

“Is your father dead?”

His question caught me off guard. I hadn’t given my father much thought lately. The divorce had been quick, and with all the bullshit surrounding Juliet, my parents’ divorce was background noise. We were all old enough that we were already doing our own thing. We had taken a side, and it wasn’t his.

“Why do you ask that?”

“I met Gwen, but neither you nor your siblings have spoken about your father. So, is he dead?”

It was only natural for him to question everything about the people he was meeting.

“He wasn’t the best father.” I told him the truth. Amidst all the thinking I had been doing, I had come to the conclusion that I would be honest with River, even if it cost me my relationship with him. I’d rather him know the kind of man I was, mistakes and all, than feed him a lie that would unravel sooner or later.

“The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, then,” he added as a way to get a dig at me.
