Chapter Seven
It'd been almost a week since the night in the cabin, and a week since he'd had anything resembling a decent night's sleep.
At first, he blamed it on the poor quality of what had been a brand new mattress, and immediately ordered a new one, express delivered. When that hadn't helped, he blamed it on his own lack of activity, and took to the gym before work, hoping to exhaust himself. That, too, hadn't worked, and it only served to deprive him of even more sleep.
Now he sat in his office, with at least an hour to himself before anyone else arrived. The glow of his laptop screen was the only light in the room, and his gaze was fixed on it as he wrestled with his own desires.
He'd started to type the words into the search bar at least ten separate times before thinking better of it and deleting them. But every time, he came right back to the flashing prompt, and somehow the words appeared again.
What does biting the back of the neck mean in shifter culture
He stared at the words until they lost all meaning, and apparently his finger strayed to the Enter button, because the prompt was suddenly gone, replaced by a list of results.
He clicked on the first. An open-source wiki he'd built into ShifterNet, only accessible by shifters with registered IPs, and only modifiable by alphas or other high-ranking members with experience and credibility.
The returned article was simply entitled "claiming bite," and he scanned the associated text.
A claiming bite is a blood bond between two shifters. In the fledgling days of shifter society, is was the animal's way of showing it had a claim to another shifter: Its mate. The claiming bite was associated with fierce loyalty. Partners bound by the bite were monogamous, and would not seek another mate, even after the death of their partner.
The last widespread use of the claiming mark was recorded in the late 50's, before the Paranormal Integration Act of 1959 was passed into law, in which shifters were required to register with the government and integrate with human societies.
Aidan's gaze narrowed as he read on. This article made it sound like something that had stopped being a fixture of shifter society. Something his wolf wouldn't even know about, unless the instinct still lingered somewhere deep within him.
Scholars believe the claiming bite is associated with a deeply held belief that there is one true mate for every shifter. Evidence for this phenomenon is difficult to gather, however, and many modern packs and organizations discourage the use of such archaic mating practices.
In the last twenty years, fewer than fifty claiming marks have been reported. It is uncertain if this is because of the shift toward more human behaviors such as dating and the choice of a longterm mate, or if the instinct has been curbed from the animal within today's shifter.
An asterisk followed the passage, and Aidan's eyes scanned down the page, finding the notation.
* Of the fifty-four recorded claiming marks, fifty-one were initiated by particularly powerful shifters.
