CHAPTER SIX

JAVID SUSPECTED HIS wife was attempting to hoist him with his own petard. The memory of how smooth, silky and warm her skin had felt under his touch flamed through his veins even as he bit back a groan when her hands moved over his shoulders. If this was what she meant by within reason and at her own pace, he wasn’t going to protest. Because if that meant more of this...

He gritted his teeth and mentally shook his head.

She was already growing far too addictive far too quickly.

Forging an easier alliance so the ten years of his reign wouldn’t be entirely unbearable was one thing. Letting her win, even at something as ephemeral as sex, was quite another.

There was a reason he’d trained himself never to be in the thrall of a woman. They were mercurial creatures. Like his mother, their affection waxed and waned like the lunar cycle, more often than not entirely tied into what they could gain from him. What his regal status could bring them.

He’d trained himself to give only so much and no more. To take what he wanted and, while ensuring both parties were satisfied, to never stay long enough to be used or rejected. To never be made to feel as if he was surplus to requirements after he’d worn out his usefulness.

While, contrarily, he’d made himself indispensable to the people that mattered to him. Rewarded loyalty with loyalty. If he could count those people on the fingers of one hand, then so be it. He’d rather have that than thousands of acolytes who would only take and take.

Whatever Anaïs was offering, he needed to match like for like and no more. As long as it benefited Riyaal, and a harmonious kingdom, of course. Adnan had been misguided, but he’d loved his kingdom. Javid owed it to his flesh and blood not to falter in his rule.

So he clenched his gut against the surge of lust as her fingers glided over his triceps, and reminded himself that, only a few hours ago, Anaïs had been adamantly opposed to this. To have changed her mind so quickly...

Could he trust her?

No matter.

His guard would stay high. He’d see where she intended to take this. And if it ended up with her in his bed...

‘Est-ce bon?’ Is this okay?

He hid his smile because once again she’d given herself away with that husky query in her father tongue.

‘I’m not complaining,’ he returned, letting amusement trail through his response even as the unsettled sensation remained. It’d been a long time since he’d felt even remotely out of his depth.

But then he’d never held the role of King. Never had to take a wife. All new situations that justified his current mood, surely?

No.

The challenges of ruling were unique enough to hold his interest, the idea of forging a better path for Riyaal and its people on the world stage one he’d quickly grown to relish.

In ten years, he would hand over the reins to whoever succeeded him with a much better kingdom than his late cousin had left it.
