Chapter Twenty
Oscar needed to calm down. He had been unprepared for how he would react when he brought Farley there. He had never shared that place with any other person, not even Stella, and yet, he had not thought twice about sharing it with Farley.
Except he was messing it all up by playing around and frightening the man.
"I'll never let anyone hurt you again," he said quietly.
"You can't promise that," Farley replied, sounding weary.
The need to protect welled up fast and fierce inside of him. "I can promise that. And I did. Come with me." Oscar grabbed his hand gently but in a way that would offer no argument. He was too excited to show Farley his special place.
Farley followed behind and Oscar kept a quick pace but was careful to remember that Farley most likely couldn't see as well in the pitch black. Oscar's shifter vision allowed him to see just as well at night as he did during the day, sometimes better. He pulled Farley forward. "You'll need to stay close," Oscar murmured. "For your safety." He loved feeling the heat of the other man against his back and remembered how blistering hot Farley was when Oscar was almost inside of him.
"How far is it?" Farley asked sounding more curious than anything else.
"Not far at all. Can you see how the woods are already beginning to clear?"
"Still looks pitch black to me. Though I can at least see you a little better now."
"Lucky you," Oscar said, smiling. He didn't think he had ever smiled more in his entire life combined than he had since meeting Farley.
"Lucky me," Farley replied quietly.
The brush began to clear to the point where even Farley would be able to notice the increase in light. Oscar did not release his hand, however, he held it more tightly, leading Farley toward a small, calm lake. Surrounded by forests all the way around, the lake was a surprise to any hiker who came by. It wasn't marked on any maps of the area, which Oscar appreciated. In the hottest parts of the summer the lake was reduced to little more than a pond but it had been a wet year and right now the lake was as large as Oscar could ever remember it being. The surface of the lake looked like obsidian: smooth, black, and featureless. The deceptive tranquility of the lake was part of what he liked about it. There was life, but you would miss it if you weren't careful.
"What is this place?" Farley asked with a hushed tone. Oscar understood. There was something about this place that demanded reverence.
"Would you call me lame if I said it was my happy place?"
"Of course not," Farley replied, his eyes roamed around them, taking it all in.
Oscar let go of his hand but so he could grab the bag he brought. He pulled out a blanket, spreading it on the bank he sat down and reached up for Farley.
"A picnic by the lake at midnight?
