to….” Then there’s this pause while she has an argument in her own head. She does that a lot. “No, tell me, because I need to know who not to speak to in the canteen.”

“Make your mind up. Which is it? Remember, ignorance is bliss.”

We walk into her living room. I’m exhausted. I’ve had a stressed out day. I need to relax.

My phone beeps and vibrates, and Gab does that eye roll thing she saves for when she’s trying to make a point.

“Why can’t they leave you alone for just a day?”

“I can’t help my popularity.”

“If that’s what you want to call it.”

I pull it out of my pocket, staring at the screen to see who my message is from: the cute brunette from the party the other week. Not urgent. I leave it on the table as I pass.

“Michy, who in my chair?”

I lie down on her sofa and stretch out. This space won’t last long, I know that much.

“No one. Honestly. That’s your little piece of sacred turf in my house.”

Her arched eyebrows furrow as she thinks. She smiles then lies down, squashing me so we’re face to face.

“See, you do love me.”

“Only because you’re such an idiot.”

“I’m Head of Intelligence.”

“And Sam is Elle’s personal assistant. Go figure.”

She laughs as her cold feet play with my toes. Her hands hold mine. At least these extremities are warm.

She stares at me, deeply, not saying a word. Of all the things I know about Gab this is the most solid: how she works up to an important question. The pause isn’t due to nerves or being undecided about anything, it’s her processing reams of information.

“Do you think it’s wise to go after Discord if she’s injured over Elle? Think about my question.”

So I do. I remember back to the sofa when Dis confirmed it was loves lost, and how lonely she looked. Then my behaviour falls into place. It’s not a nice feeling.
