In spring, Sarah loved to set her easel and canvas against an old tree trunk so she could paint the cherry trees in our orchard. Sometimes she sketched; sometimes she painted. Though there were only seven trees in the orchard, each one was a different variety, a different size, all blooming in a profusion of pink.

One painting showed the whole tree in blossom; in another, just a single blossom filled the eighteen-inch-square canvas; yet in another, a branch was bursting with blossoms and buds. Each year offered a pictorial of Sarah’s growth and maturity as an artist. In spring, her paintings decorated the kitchen and dining nook. Once the blossoms outside were spent, the paintings inside were put away till the following spring. Painted cherry trees.

But in 2005, when Sarah’s paintings came down, Caiti was disconsolate and began a campaign to leave the island and stay with a friend’s family on Maui, assuring me that her classes and schoolwork could be completed on the Internet. Bainbridge was like a repetitive hand of losing cards for her. Sadly watching her pack her pink duffle bag, I thought, “This must be how it feels to lose the other half of yourself.” Caiti was seventeen years old and desperately lost, and I must have been desperately confused, dropping her curbside at the Seattle-Tacoma airport, with a one-way ticket.
