Chapter 11

The N.Y. Supreme Court

Losing a Winning Case

Adam woke up in the morning because a light beam was shining on his eyes through an open window. It seemed weird to him, since he usually closed his windows before going to sleep. He stretched and screamed from pain in his spine, and he thought that he must have broken his spine. He dragged himself to the bathroom and when he looked in the mirror he gasped. Both of his shoulder blades had bright red bruises. Adam began to remember what had happened. Everything seemed like a dream to him: Themis, Grandfather Nicholas, heaven’s chancellery…he felt dizzy. He hurried to his living room and saw that on the table there were two pictures which were drawn with a pencil. One of them was his portrait and on the second was his grandfather. He took these portraits, sat on a sofa and started looking at them. At the bottom left corner, there was a tiny signature, “Cartoonist of Heaven’s Chancellery.” His heart trembled when he realized that he would never again see Grandfather Nicholas and Themis the woman of unearthly beauty. However, he became happy because his offenders Ali Baster and Lampoon were punished for their wrongdoings by heaven’s chancellery and would get what they deserved. Adam approached the window, and was looking at the sky with a desire to go back up there. Everything on earth seemed to him uninteresting and primitive. Adam laughed to himself and continued his train of thought, remembering what happened yesterday.

“Everybody says that the American System of Justice is the most perfect in the world. Well, maybe, maybe…However, it also has loop holes… it would have been better if they would learn from heaven’s chancellery which doesn’t have any mistakes. But if I told anyone about my adventure, people on earth would just think I’m crazy.”

After a couple of days, Adam received a letter from the Supreme Court that said that his case would not be reviewed by the Supreme Court because the court decided that the appellate court didn’t make any mistakes and because his case didn’t seem to be vitally important. It was recommended that he come to the Supreme Court to pick up his documents. In order to make him feel happy, Adam ordered a car service called “Phaeton” to take him to the Supreme Court, but the driver didn’t look like Amaxas.

In the Supreme Court, there was an endless amount of lines for different windows, dialogs with clerks who wore plain and bored faces. Adam wanted to again have the same feelings which he had when he met Ptiscy on the roof. He went by the similar hallway in order to find the same staircase; he saw that there were no staircases at all. At first, he thought he must have gone down the wrong corridor, so he went by other ones, but then realized that he wasn’t wrong.
