SECOND WAVE: GROUP ERUPTION

Just before the second wave, the feelings of tension, discomfort, and resistance begin to intensify. We continue to hold this growing energy in awareness. As this is happening, someone invariably chooses to share with the group what they are experiencing, and it is as though their words have popped the lid off of a boiling pot, releasing steam and pressure. A powerful eruption of emotional content surges into the space, pushing through the hard layer of denial and clearing it away.

In its place, a cascade of strong sensations, emotions, memories, and images pours into the room. These are often generational memories and historical images, perhaps connected to the Holocaust, American slavery, or any other cultural trauma that we’ve made our focus. It’s not uncommon for experiences of mass remembering to occur during this stage, and many people may begin to cry as these deeply stored generational memories surface.

Again, we are called to bring compassionate witness to all that arises, to feel and see and experience, and—paradoxically—to be present with the past.
