CHAPTER SEVEN

“You really don’t understand the concept of a day off, do you.” Aiden strode into the living room, carrying the long plastic tub with the family’s artificial spruce tree inside. He winked as Lexi looked up from the couch while Chelsea O’Brien read a list of names over the phone at Lexi’s ear. “This is the last of them marked Christmas. Do you want me to start putting this together? Don’t suppose you found the tree skirt yet, did you?”

Lexi briefly took the phone from between her shoulder and ear and pointed to the braided rug in front of the bay window. Then she got up to retrieve the Christmas tree skirt from the tub she’d opened and tossed it to him, hoping he understood he was in charge of assembling the tree while she paced past Blue gnawing on his rawhide treat. While she appreciated Aiden using his muscle and a better sense of balance than she was sporting this weekend to haul the holiday decorations down from the attic, she was anxious about letting so much time pass between her attack and getting to the office tomorrow morning. If she was feeling well enough to put up Christmas decorations, then she was well enough to start gathering information about Giselle Byrd’s and Jennifer Li’s killer.

Besides, it seemed a lot smarter to focus on her current investigation than on how quickly she’d become accustomed to having Aiden in the house with her. They’d shared meals, watched a couple of their favorite Christmas movies—singing along with one and quoting their favorite lines from the other. He’d doctored her injuries, taken Blue on routine patrols around the house and neighborhood. Despite her wish that he had some bad habits that might make him less attractive, he neatly folded his clothes, and he helped clean up the kitchen after meals.

She was still holding out for him being a lousy kisser. That might be the one thing that could curtail these feelings he resurrected in her.

But then there was the dangerous habit of falling asleep on the couch she’d developed the past few nights. Well, not exactly on the couch. She’d fallen asleep on Aiden. She’d snuggled up to the furnace of his body, feeling sheltered and content, with his hard body to lean against and his arm draped across the back of the couch behind her shoulders. But she’d awakened to find herself shamelessly sprawled across his chest, the tips of her breasts clutched into tight points where they rubbed against him, the crown of her hair tucked perfectly beneath his chin. This morning, her thigh had been wedged between his legs and she’d felt the evidence of his arousal pushing against her hip. They’d been fully clothed—she in her pajamas and Aiden in jeans and a T-shirt. But it hadn’t made a bit of difference to her body’s hungry female response to the lure of his masculine contours.
