CHAPTER TWELVE

It bothered Trey that Ramirez seemed to have so much interest in Roni. Too much interest and he worried there was more that Roni wasn’t telling him about her relationship with the IAD detective.

With a dip of his head, he said, “I know he probably questioned you about that night, only... Is there something else you want to tell me, Roni?”

Her body jumped beside his and she hesitantly met his gaze. Vehemently shaking her head, hair swishing around that determined jaw, she said, “What do you mean?”

“You know what I mean. Did IAD want more than just some answers from you?” he pushed.

“Mi’jo, it’s not time for work,” his mother admonished, clearly picking up on the tense vibes between them.

Since all of his family grew quiet and looked his way, he opted to drop the subject. For now. When they were alone later, he intended to get to the bottom of whatever was happening with Roni and IAD.

“I’m sorry,” he said. “It is time for family and not work.” From beside him came Roni’s relieved sigh and the escape of tension from her body.

He filled his belly with the wonderful food his family had brought, giving into hunger as he realized that they hadn’t eaten all day. As his hunger was sated, he realized that his family’s company, their unqualified love and support, was also providing a balm to the pain and anger that had been in his heart since his partner’s death.

When his mother and sister got up to make coffee and bring out the dessert, he helped Roni, Sophie and Carolina clear off the table and put away any leftovers. Ricky and Rob joined them a second later with the last of the dishes.

As he sidled up to Trey to help, Ricky said, “I’m serious about that chat, Trey. You’ve had a lot happen lately. You’re not yourself.”

“I appreciate the offer, but not right now, Ricky,” he said as he snapped the lid on one of the containers and reached for another.

His brother clapped him on the back, but kept quiet, aware that he wasn’t going to change Trey’s mind now. Maybe never, not that Ricky would stop trying.

If there was one thing Trey knew, his family would always have his back. But would Roni?

He shot a quick look at his watch, worried about the time, but it was barely seven and South Beach nightlife didn’t get going until much later.

“Don’t worry, hermano. Party doesn’t start until nine,” Mia said as she caught him checking his watch.

He should have been relieved by that, except that he was eager to move on the investigation of Wilson. He also resolved to get Roni alone and grill her about what was happening with the IAD detectives.

But for now, that would have to wait in favor of the table laden with coffees, sweet Cuban flan, and pastelitos.

He forced himself to sit and plaster on a smile, but that smile grew more natural as his family’s love worked its magic. Or maybe
