HOME. SHOWER. BED.

Those were Ree’s top priorities despite the momentary distraction of watching the sheriff get his due. The man genuinely paled.

The phone call didn’t take long, and he sure didn’t waste any time when it ended. He was out of his SUV in a heartbeat.

“Excuse me for coming down hard on the two of you earlier,” he said. “We’ve had a rash of...”

His voice trailed off like he couldn’t think of how to finish the sentence, a sure sign he was lying. Ree clenched and released her fingers a few times, trying to work off some of the tension and frustration from the interaction they’d had with him a few minutes ago.

It was amazing what an attitude adjustment could do. The sheriff’s smile was ear to ear as he handed both their identification and weapons back to them.

“My apologies about taking those,” he said, leaning forward rather than stepping too close.

Ree wasn’t certain what he’d been told but he now seemed afraid of them, and she didn’t mind the change in demeanor one bit. It also reminded her just how powerful their boss was, considering she could make a call in the middle of the night and have a sheriff change his tune in a heartbeat.

“My name is Sheriff Rex Gunther,” he said, offering a handshake.

Quint stared at the man’s hand for a long moment before finally giving in and shaking. Ree was next, and she had similar enthusiasm.

“I’m at your disposal,” Sheriff Gunther said. “Anything you need, you ask.”

“We need a ride back to Dallas,” Quint stated. “Preferably now.”

“Take my keys,” the sheriff said. He dug inside his pocket and tossed over the key fob. “I have a deputy on the way, and I’ll be here on the scene taking detailed notes and pictures for quite a while.”

“Dallas is a couple of hours from here,” Quint said. “Are you sure you want us to take your primary vehicle?”

Ree shook her head.

“We can’t.” There was no way she was driving up in a sheriff’s SUV unless she was in the back seat with handcuffs on or else she would blow her cover.

“I can arrange an unmarked vehicle,” he offered before checking his watch. “I can have something here in the next fifteen or twenty minutes if you can hold tight.”

“That would be fine,” Ree said. “And, Sheriff, do you have an EMT available to take a look at my fiancé’s head injury? He took a blow during the crash, and I want to make one hundred percent certain he gets a green light before we leave the scene. You’ll probably want to put all this in your report, as well.”

“I’ll wake Donovan. There’s no need for a report on this one. We’ll just get you checked out, set up and on your way in a jiffy,” he said, holding up a hand as if to say he was on it. He had a whole lot more skip in his step now as he’d made certain an EMT was on the way to the scene.
