LEVI FOLLOWED DALLAS to the sheriff’s house. His thoughts filled with the woman in the truck ahead of his and how much more he wanted from her than just a partner to solve a case. How had he come to this point with a woman he’d only known a very short time?

Yes, he was attracted to her. She was tough, but easy on the eye and smart. And she knew how to shoot a gun.

He smiled. Since when was being able to fire a gun a requirement for any woman he might consider dating? Still, he found her capabilities sexy, and she made his blood burn.

When they arrived in front of the small house, Dallas pulled into the driveway.

Levi parked in the street against the curb and joined Dallas at the base of the porch steps. He rested his hand at the small of her back, as if it were the most natural thing in the world, and walked up the steps beside her.

The sheriff met them at the front door, still wearing his uniform. “Come in, come in,” he said. “Dinner’s ready.” He held the door for them as they walked inside. The sheriff’s home was modest, a single-story ranch of red brick with a wide front porch. The furniture inside was dated, but tasteful and inviting. The scent of garlic and tomato sauce filled the air, making Levi’s stomach growl.

A pleasantly plump woman with graying hair stepped out of the kitchen wearing a white apron over a sundress with sandals on her feet. She carried a wooden spoon. “Oh, good, you’re here.” And she greeted them with a smile. “I’m glad you decided to come. I made too much for just two people.” Her lips twisted. “I just can’t get used to cooking for two after having had four children to feed.”

“Deputy Jones and Deputy Warren, this is my wife, Beverly. Beverly, you know Deputy Jones, and this is Levi Warren. He’s working for Trace Travis and his security agency, the Outriders.”

“Oh, please, let’s not be so formal,” Beverly said. “Dallas, it’s good to see you again, and, Levi, it’s nice to meet you. Please have a seat at the dining table. My husband and I will bring the food in while it’s nice and hot. I’ve set out the yearbooks for the year Dylan graduated and a couple of them on either side of his graduation year. We can look over those after dinner. I might have a few comments I can make about some of those students, because I had them in the class I taught at the high school.”

“What did you teach?” Dallas asked.

“English, not everyone’s favorite subject,” she said with a grimace.

“But necessary,” Dallas said.

“Absolutely,” she said with a big smile. “So, please have a seat. We’ll be right in.”

Levi held a chair at the dining table for Dallas. She settled in the seat and waited for him to sit across from her.

The sheriff came in with a big bowl of spaghetti noodles, and his wife brought in another bowl of sauce.
