CHAPTER ELEVEN

Faith cried out as Dane, moving backward, slammed into her. A bullet clipped the doorframe of the shack, and a second sent up a shower of dirt near Dane’s feet. “Run!” he shouted, and pushed her forward.

She ran, scrambling up the hill and into the cover of the woods, a man’s bellows of rage echoing around them like the cries of some wild animal. Shots followed them as they continued to race through the trees. Before long, they’d reach the fence. She scanned the darkness, desperate not to hit the barbed wire at a full run, yet not daring to slow down until the last second. Whoever was following them continued to fire sporadically, but shooting a handgun while running uphill in the dark would challenge even the best shot. Still, a random ricochet or lucky aim might kill either one of them at any second.

Faith spotted a large outcropping of rock and ducked behind it. Gasping for breath, she drew her Glock and steadied herself against the rock. When the shooter ran past, pursuing Dane, she could get behind him, and maybe have a chance of picking him off.

But Dane, looking back, apparently misinterpreted her move and came stumbling back after her. “Come on,” he said, grabbing her arm.

“I’m not—”

He didn’t wait to hear what she had to say, merely picked her up, threw her over his shoulder and resumed running.

She wanted to scream at him to put her down. Maybe hit him in the head with the butt of her pistol to try to knock some sense into him. But with the shooter crashing through the woods behind them, she didn’t dare do anything to slow him down. Instead, she made sure she still had a firm hold on the gun. “When we get to the fence, stop a minute and let me get off a shot,” she said. “This guy isn’t even trying to sneak up on us.”

Dane’s answer was a grunt, which she took as agreement. Sure enough, when they reached the fence, he paused long enough to set her on her feet. He doubled over, hands on his knees, breathing hard. “Do you see him?”

“Yes.” The shooter was a dark, bulky shape, moving through the trees. His muzzle flashed and they both ducked. Then she returned fire—one, two, three shots. The shooter stumbled, though whether because she had hit him or because he was surprised, she couldn’t tell.

“Come on.” Dane grabbed her shoulder. “Let’s go.”

She dove through the fence and he followed, readying to pick her up again. “Don’t be stupid,” she said. “I can run faster than you can.” Then, to prove it, she took off.

She expected the man—it must have been the guard, asleep in the little hut—to follow them. Instead, he shouted curses, sounding winded, but didn’t pursue. Dane took a different route back to the FJ, one that offered more cover and took them along the creek for what must have been a couple of miles. By the time they
