Chapter Nine

Marc stayed still as he opened his eyes. Something had woken him, but he didn’t know what it was. He wasn’t used to having men sleep over in his bed, but he didn’t think waking up with Happy pressed to his side was what bothered him. This was something else, something that made the hairs on the back of his neck stand up.

He jiggled Happy’s arm until the man’s eyelashes started to flutter. Marc quickly pressed a finger over Happy’s lips. The man’s eyes snapped open and then rounded.

Marc held his other finger against his own lips. “Sshhh.”

Happy nodded.

Marc rolled to the side of the bed and slid down to the floor and grabbed the pajama bottoms he had discarded earlier, pulling them back up his legs. He opened the nightstand drawer and pulled out his service pistol, checking the magazine for ammo and then quietly pushing it back into place. He winced as he pulled the hammer back, praying it didn’t make too much noise.

Marc leaned over the edge of the mattress and pressed his mouth against Happy’s ear. “Get dressed and then lock yourself in the bathroom. I’m going after your mama.”

Happy nodded and rolled to the other side of the bed. Marc watched as Happy slid off the mattress and bent over to grab his clothes before tiptoeing into the bathroom. He waited until the door closed behind Happy before moving toward his bedroom door.

He could be worried about nothing but he had always trusted his instincts, and his instincts were screaming that the two people he had sworn to protect were in danger.

Marc slid out of his room and down the hallway to the guest room. There was a light on over the stove, but it only cast a faint light into the hallway. It was something Marc was used to so he could see just fine as he moved cautiously down the hallway.

He wished he could knock and announce himself before stepping into Anna’s room, but he knew he couldn’t. If there was someone in the house, he didn’t want to alert them that he was up, or where he was.

Marc turned the doorknob and gently pushed the door open, stepping quickly inside and closing the door. A cursory glance around the room sent Marc’s heart into his throat.

“Anna,” he whispered. He couldn’t see her anywhere. He knew the lump in the middle of the bed was not a person but rather a pile of pillows. He had done the very same thing too many times as a teenager so he could sneak out and have a little fun. He knew what that lump looked like.

Marc walked over and lifted the dust ruffle, checking on under the bed. The only thing under there was a pair of socks and some vicious looking dust bunnies.

“Anna?” Marc whispered again, a little louder this time. Happy would be devastated if anything happened to his mother. Marc would, too. Happy and Anna were depending on him to keep them protected.
