CHAPTER 5

SATO MEANDERED DOWN the Tokyo streets, not caring if his lunch hour would likely be spent without food. Aoi’s gift still eluded him. He tried skimming through athletic wear during a work break, but Jiro came and spent twenty minutes talking about the times the office running group met.

Sato turned the corner onto another road lined with shops and restaurants. Couples filled every seat for a romantic Christmas Eve lunch. Restaurants would be booked months in advance, so couples wanting to go the KFC route were stuck with a romantic lunch if they called late.

Every couple Sato passed held hands. His throat tightened, and he tugged on his tie. The holiday allowed a more relaxed attitude regarding PDAs usually kept private. Sato longed for a time when he and Aoi could do the same.

Another five minutes and Sato entered the biggest manga shop in Tokyo. Three stories lined with books from obscure Heian titles to the latest boy’s love titles were displayed on shelves and tables.

Aoi loved to read boy’s love manga so it would make a good gift. He once told Sato it was so when his agent called about reading a script for a drama CD he would know what title she was talking about.

Sato picked up the latest in a mech suit series he was reading and climbed the stairs to boys’ love. He waited for a woman to leave the section before wandering down the aisle himself.

His weight shifted between his feet. Perhaps if he bought a few mech title he could hide the boys’ love title among them.

“Maybe this one,” Sato mumbled to himself and pulled it out of the shelf.

The cover looked innocent enough, two guys hanging out on a sofa. It was shrink-wrapped, though so it probably wasn’t.

He walked a little further and found one he could peek through. The artwork was stunning, but the plot revolved around high schoolers. Aoi had voice acted in high school dramas a few times, but Sato couldn’t shake the awkwardness of it. Kind of like giving someone underage porn, even if the biggest thing the couple did was a kiss after the love confession at the end.

“He’s probably read all these anyway.” Sato sighed.

He didn’t really have to give Aoi a gift from Santa.

Sato paid for his manga and checked his phone on the walk back to the office. Aoi’s plane would’ve landed a few minutes ago. He didn’t have to message Sato after all.

On the walk back to the office, Sato’s gaze stayed on his shoes rather than the couples walking about. His glasses fogged over as he stepped inside the office building. He sighed and slid them off, waving them in the air in a feeble attempt to get them adjusted sooner.

Jiro came in after him. “It’s getting cold out there.”

“Yeah.” Sato slid his glasses back on. One lens was clear and the other left Jiro in a half cloud.

“You heard it’s supposed to snow later tonight?”

“That’s not good,” Sato said.

Sato was so busy looking at the Hokkaido weather he didn’t check on Tokyo.
