CHAPTER NINE

Nate had been dreading the possibility of finding Candace at Jamie’s place almost as much as the possibility of not finding her. Facing his ex-wife with a pregnant Olivia by his side had been the most uncomfortable he’d ever felt, even more than the time Olivia’s father accused him of knocking up Olivia back when they were just friends.

But now that it was over, Nate was grateful for the closure he had been given. Candace didn’t hate him and she didn’t think he had been a terrible husband. In fact, she’d pretty much let him off the hook for everything that had gone wrong in their relationship. Most of all, seeing how gracefully Olivia had handled the situation had only reaffirmed the immense love and respect that he felt for her.

“I have to say, that was not how I expected this day to go down,” Olivia said as they were walking from the car to the hospital. They had decided to stop by and check on Vince and Natasha while they were in town.

“That Jamie guy was…interesting.” Nate put his hand on Olivia’s back. “Not exactly the guy I would’ve expected Candy to have a wild sex marathon with, though.”

“Really?” Olivia gave him a surprised look. “He is basically the perfect guy for that. Did you see what he was packing in those boxer briefs?”

“Did you?” Nate asked indignantly. “You are a married lady, Mrs. Tucker. You’re only supposed to be looking at what your husband is packing.”

Olivia laughed. “Don’t worry, stud. You’ve got nothing to worry about.”

“That’s what all my wives say before they leave me for Mr. Boxer Briefs,” Nate grumbled, only half-joking. He felt slightly better when Olivia draped an arm behind him and squeezed his ass.

“Candace didn’t leave you, Nate. She set you free.” Olivia removed her hand and took his arm instead. “Now, you get to have wild sex marathons with me. For the next five months, anyway.”

“Are you really almost in your fourth month already?” Nate said, feeling slightly shell-shocked.

“One week left and then we’ll be in the second trimester.” Olivia gripped his arm tighter. “I’m told that means I might stop vomiting so much.”

Nate hoped that was true. He hated seeing Olivia so sick all the time. “It’s good that you’ll stop vomiting before you become incontinent.”

“Bet you’re regretting that divorce from Candace now. She doesn’t strike me as the type of woman that throws up regularly or pees herself.” Olivia was trying to sound like she was joking, but Nate detected something else in her words.

“Liv, honey, I was just teasing.” He pulled her to a stop. “You don’t really think I would still rather be married to her, do you?”

“No, not really.” Olivia looked a little sad. “It was just hard for me to see the two of you together again. Especially when she was looking disgustingly beautiful with her skinny body poking out of that nearly see-through shirt.”

Nate’s insides twisted painfully. This was one time when he was taking no pleasure in Olivia’s jealousy.
