Chapter 6
“Uncle Maze!” Jade squealed as she came racing into the kitchen with her twin and dads. “Daddy said you were sick, so we made you presents.” She was bouncing up and down gleefully, her black ponytailed hair swinging back and forth, as she delivered the news. It was pretty much one of the cutest things I had ever seen.
“You did?” I asked in shock with a bright smile. I had never gotten presents before! Then again, not sure I ever was sick or injured, but I’d leave that little detail out. “What did you make me?”
“I did some drawings for you, Uncle Maze,” Wade said shyly as he swayed back on forth on his feet. His sister stole the show normally, which Wade never seemed to have a problem with, but I knew Alexi and Chiquita were trying to work with them to have some balance. He handed them over to me, and I couldn’t help but show my surprise when I looked at the drawings he had presented to me.
I glanced at his beaming parents and blurted the first thing on my mind. “These are really good. Are you sure he’s not older?”
“I really did them,” Wade confirmed very seriously and went into great detail telling me who everyone was in each drawing. He’d made sure all the latest cool superheroes were in them so they would protect me from ever getting hurt again. Awww, too cute!
Jade had made me some fuzzy, twisty guys that I swear I saw on a commercial. I guess Alexi and Chiquita saw the same one and had to order whatever it was for the twins. Then again we were all like that where the twins were concerned. I don’t think there was ever a time any of us went shopping and didn’t bring back something for the adorable munchkins we had all instantly come to love.
Right as I was done thanking them, breakfast was ready. I had to try very hard to keep myself from drooling when I focused on the smell of the amazing aroma of French toast and warm maple syrup. By then everyone was now in the kitchen, sitting at the table, passing around platefuls of food, and chattering happily with each other. I couldn’t help but smile at the chaos that was now a part of our everyday lives.
“You okay?” Zander asked as he sat down next to me with a concerned look on his face.
“I’m great,” I answered, catching Horse’s gaze. He gave me a nod that he understood. “We’re a real family now, not just a bunch of misfits that found each other and banded together.”
“It’s nice. I never had this, and after my mom died a few years ago, all I’ve had is Bryl.” I felt my whole body stiffen at the mention of the werecat’s name.
“I’m glad you had someone at least.” I worked hard to keep my tone even and made sure not to imply anything. A new man in his life would not win any argument over the only family Zander had.
