Using your pick or your thumb, lightly pluck the thickest or SIXTH string. Listen to it. It sounds pretty cool doesn't it? Believe it or not, you just made music. Congratulations!

When you pluck a string without your playing hand pressing it down anywhere on the neck of your guitar, this is called playing an OPEN string. It is open because your fingers are not holding it down on the fretboard.

Use the palm of your hand to mute the strings. Just rest your hand on the strings like this.

Notice how the sound stops? This is a quick and easy way to keep your guitar quiet.
