Leaf miners

Leaf miners are the maggots of a small fly similar to the cabbage fly or carrot rust fly. They tunnel through beet, chard, and spinach leaves, although they’ll also mine bean, blackberry, lettuce, and other leaves. Only a few insecticides work on leaf miners because they’re protected from direct contact by being inside the leaf. But Spinosad, especially with a penetrant added, can rescue spinach, beets, and chard crops.

I’ve never seen a leaf miner in my garden, so I can’t say anything from personal experience. However, I once sent a section of spun-fiber row cover to a Washington State gardener who complained of leaf miners ruining every beet crop he planted. The gardener carefully covered most of a beet bed after the seedlings were large enough to thin and weed, and kept the cover in place undisturbed until harvest. His unprotected beets were thoroughly ruined. Under the cover there was a fine harvest, though the fabric did reduce light levels somewhat so the beets made smaller bottoms than he would have liked. As with carrots similarly being protected against carrot fly larvae, light reduction can be compensated for by establishing a lower plant density.
