Chapter 6
The Soul Returns
And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.
—ANAÏS NIN
AS THE SOUL PASSES through the spirit world, it realizes that it has entered a sphere of creative energy, univer- sal thought, compassion, joy, and quiet contemplation. It is a very productive place that is designed to help the soul study, gain knowledge, and mature. Here, souls reunite with their spirit families and soul groups to work on their soul lessons and plan their next earthly missions. In this inter-life, or between lives in the earthly realm, souls can progress to higher forms of consciousness. As I said in chapter 3, souls go to schools where they can specialize in various interests that will assist in future incarnations. Souls may want to expand their creative gifts; for instance, if they have a talent for singing or dancing, they may work to perfect these abilities.
Eventually, a soul will feel a pull to life outside the spiritual world so that it can broaden its horizons even further. When a soul chooses to reincarnate, it can do so not only on earth, but also on other planets, star systems, and galaxies. A soul can incarnate in many forms other than a physical body. It may choose to be a vaporous being, a water form, or even an animal. Life offers a variety of existences and, with each choice, a soul maps out specific lessons that fit the specific environment. If a soul chooses to return to earth, it will ready itself for human lessons.
A soul has a good understanding of the lessons necessary for transformation and always has a choice whether to progress or not. It can stay in the inter-life as long as it wants and can progress spiritually there; however, growth will be much slower. Our physical world works directly with emotions and offers a variety of hardships and challenges not found on any other dimension. Sometimes the choice to return to earth is a difficult one, because, to a spiritual being, earth seems unnatural and lacking in love. It is a world filled with fear, uncertainty, aggression, and naiveté. On the other hand, earth definitely provides many of life’s pleasures, which a soul remembers with great sentimentality. Because earth is a marvelous schoolroom where a soul’s spiritual ideals are tested, a soul may return to earth many times for the opportunity to perfect its strength and neutralize past karma. By reincarnating to earth, souls progress very rapidly.
Reincarnation has been an enduring belief for thousands of years and is a part of almost every modern culture. It was once a part of Christianity, until it was eradicated in 325 AD by the Roman Emperor Constantine at the Council of Nicaea in an effort to unite various feuding factions of his empire. In order to fully understand the concept of reincarnation, we must let go of the preconceived restraints of linear time and space that limit our three-dimensional world.
