Chapter Eight

DESPITE A slight hangover, Neil woke at the crack of dawn with a huge smile on his face and almost vibrating out of his own skin. Not only had Ted spent the day with him, but he’d come asking for him at dinner as well, and Neil was almost positive Ted had wanted to kiss him good night. He hadn’t actually gotten a kiss, but almost was closer than he’d ever gotten before.

Originally, when Ted hadn’t shown up at dinner, Neil had been disappointed but not surprised. The Turners had happily shared their table with him again, and although Neil had tried to keep his excitement over his afternoon with Ted to himself, Wanda had noticed something was up right away. Though she barely knew him, the woman had managed to pry the details out of him with the ease of a pro. It was some sort of mom-related superpower. It had to be.

Emmit had laughed and told Neil to give in before someone got hurt. Then he’d sat back while his wife extracted the information with the precision of a surgeon. Emmit’s only contribution to the conversation was a quiet, “Guess Santa came early” after his third glass of wine, which had them all laughing, the kids rolling their eyes, and Neil feeling like his face was on fire.

Damned fair skin.

After dinner, Wanda had invited Neil to join them the following day if he didn’t have “other plans,” and Neil had gone to his room feeling pretty good about the way things had turned out. But that was before Mrs. Quinn’s phone call. After, it had taken everything Neil had not to run all the way to the dining room.

But he shouldn’t get too far ahead of himself. Franklin, the douche ex, might be out of the picture, but his ghost was still haunting Ted. That was obvious. Neil wished he knew how to help, but he had no idea where to start. Ted was the one with all the education, certificates, and licenses in relationships. If Ted couldn’t figure it out, there was no way in hell Neil would. All Neil could hope for was that Ted would still be interested in him when he figured it out for himself… if Ted was interested at all, and last night hadn’t been some wine-induced delusion.

After getting dressed, Neil puttered around his room, killing time to give Ted a chance to wake up and come to breakfast. He messed around on his laptop as long as he could, but after a couple of hours he couldn’t take it anymore and decided to go down. At least in the dining room, he’d have some company to distract him.

In front of the full-length mirror on the wardrobe, Neil tugged ineffectually at the wrinkles in the hems of his jeans and then stood up and smoothed his hands over the only other nice sweater he’d brought with him. A quick look at his hair had Neil running to the bathroom in dismay for some gel.
