DON DRYSDALE

THREW SIX SHUTOUTS IN A ROW

From a pitcher’s standpoint, there is almost nothing as satisfying as hurling a shutout. Firing a shutout means that at least for one game the opposition is incapable of hitting enough of your offerings to score a run, and that epitomizes the work a pitcher hopes to do every time he takes the mound.

Shutouts, of course, are about as rare these days as doubleheaders, five-dollar tickets, and players who know how to bunt. If one team pitches as many shutouts in a single season as Don Drysdale did in six games, there might be cause for a parade.

In 1968, Drysdale fired six shutouts in a row. No one had ever done that before, and no one has ever done it since. In 1904, Doc White of the Chicago White Sox hurled five straight shutouts for a major league record that stood until Drysdale broke it. In three of his six games, Drysdale beat other future Hall of Fame pitchers.

Not only did the hard-throwing right-hander of the Los Angeles Dodgers break the shutout record, but he also set a new mark with 58 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings pitched, passing the record of 56 straight scoreless innings set in 1913 by Walter Johnson.
