Chapter Sixteen

Toto, we’re not in Kansas anymore.

Trinity

Dear diary. It’s day four in this hell hole and I’m no longer confident in my decision to let Ma and Pa—no, Bill and Eileen—take me from the Soulless Kings.

A chuckle escapes past my lips and I roll my eyes. Maybe I really am crazy. Either that or I’m on my way to it. I’ve been mentally adding entries into a diary that doesn’t exist and every once in a while, I catch myself talking to, well, myself.

I glance at the tray of breakfast food that rests on the edge of the cot in my padded room, my home for the last four days. It’s been sitting there for an hour at least. It’s brought in every morning before shift change, before he arrives. I shove it off the mattress and grin when everything scatters across the floor. I’m hungry but I’m also done. My hope is gone and there’s no longer any point in trying to save myself.

Four days. Four fucking days of hell. It’s been enough to break the strongest of people, but me especially. At least when Bill and Eileen had me, I sort of had a life. A shitty one, but it was better than this.

I swing my legs to the side and stand, stretching my arms above my head. I’ve only been let out to use the bathroom and shower, and I’m craving some fresh air. I won’t get it though. I pace the length of the room, and when the sound of the lock disengaging reaches me, I stop and stare at the door.

Dr. Masters walks in, and his face falls when he steps on scrambled egg. He takes in the mess, and I watch as his shoulders tense up and he clenches his fists at his sides. He rolls his neck and when he straightens, he locks eyes with me.

“Clean it up.”

I cross my arms over my chest while maintaining eye contact. He stalks toward me, and when the tips of his dress shoes hit my bare toes, he stops.

“Is this really the move you want to make?” he asks.

My heart is pounding so hard I fear I’ll break a rib, and still, I stand my ground.

Dr. Masters wraps his hand around my throat and shoves me back into the wall. My breath is knocked from me, but I manage to refrain from struggling against him. His hand falls to his side, and for a brief moment, I think I’ve won.

The moment passes the second his knuckles connect with my jaw and my skull bounces off the white wall padding. A metallic taste coats my tongue, and I turn my head to the side to spit it out. When my gaze returns to Dr. Masters, his eyes are wide, and his face is bright red.

“Fine.”

Dr. Masters presses his arm across my chest to hold me in place. He reaches into his pocket and pulls out a syringe, which triggers my fight response. I strain against him, struggle to get away, but he’s too strong for my tired body.
