Curt needed to know the details of the accident that ended his son’s life. He interviewed witnesses, examined police reports, and quizzed the funeral director.

Susan questioned her daughter’s doctors constantly, trying to understand the sudden death. She read dozens of books, and even called other families who had gone through a similar experience.

Some parents need to know as much about what happened as they can possibly learn. Knowing gives them a measure of peace. If that’s you, that’s okay. Direct as many questions as necessary to the right people. Most doctors, nurses, paramedics, police officers, and funeral directors are willing to answer your questions.

But other parents just don’t want to know. Giving them more information than they want can be unfair and painful. Grief is easier for them by knowing less.

“Do you want to know about this?” is a good question to ask before seeking or revealing details about the death, funeral arrangements, or medical facts. If you are the person being told, retain your right to be treated with respect. If the conversation makes you uncomfortable, say, “I would rather not hear about this, please.”

You have the right to decide whether or not to know the details. Others should respect your decision. Neither choice is wrong; make the one right for you.
