Chapter 16
Perry
I whistled low and deep. âWow. Just, wow.â The word bore repeating.
Delia always looked good, but this evening was something different. Typically, I saw her in business casual. There was nothing casual about the low-cut black dress Delia wore tonight.
âWhatâs the occasion?â I asked. âAnd whoever youâre meeting is one lucky man or woman.â I knew Delia wasnât married, but beyond that, I didnât know a lot about her private life.
âThank you, Perry.â Delia sashayed her hips before sticking a leg out and dramatically posing.
A tantalizing slit ran up the side of her leg and showed off a shapely calf and thigh. Deliaâs three-inch heels accentuated the curve of her leg. Sometimes, a womanâs shoes wore her. With Delia, she did the wearing. Delia was a woman born wearing stilettos. I inwardly cringed at the mental image that had brought up. That would have been hell on Deliaâs birth mother.
Slinking farther into the break room, Delia reached into the fridge and grabbed a couple of Tupperware bowls, placing them in a larger bag. The terrycloth bag looked out of place against Deliaâs fancy attire.
âIâve got a date tonight.â Delia twirled a hand in the air, her French manicure catching on the low lighting. âItâs more of a work thing, really.â
I blinked. âWork? Really? I didnât realize you had those kinds of meetings with clients.â My gaze roamed up and down Deliaâs body again. Thinking of Delia dressing like that for something work-related made my brain twitch, and not in a pleasant way.
âHeâs a big client.â Delia threw me a wink as she lifted the lid on one of her bowls and took a sniff. Her crinkled nose made me think whatever was inside was a few days past edible. âI might just throw the whole bowl out,â Delia said, confirming what Iâd thought.
Iâd worked at Maverick Insurance for almost a year, and Iâd never seen Delia dressed up like this. âIs that common?â I asked.
Deliaâs head popped up above another bowl sheâd pulled from the fridge. âIs what common?â
I waved a hand in Deliaâs direction and answered, âGetting dressed up and . . . going out somewhere a little more . . .â I wasnât exactly sure where Delia was headed.
Deliaâs light laughter filled the room. âOh, Perry. You have got to be the sweetest thing. Youâre worried about me.â
When I started to protest, Delia held up a halting hand. âI can hear it in your voice. Donât worry. Iâm not offended. Itâs kind of you to be concerned, but thereâs really nothing to worry about. Iâm not doing anything I donât want to do. No oneâs pressured me.â Taking a few steps closer, Delia placed a hand on her hip, accentuating her curves. âIn fact, itâs something I enjoyâsomething I excel at. I have no problem using every asset Iâve got.â
âOh.â I had no idea what else to say and simply shifted my weight, taking some pressure off my left leg. I hadnât realized Iâd been standing on it so long and winced when a twinge of unhappiness echoed through my knee.
