Chapter Nine

Willa

Something is definitely wrong here, I thought and frowned at the computer screen before taking a look at the time. Crap. It was already seven. I should have gone home at least an hour ago. I wondered if Papito had taken his pills on time and quickly checked my phone, smiling down at the message he sent at five: Took pills. Don’t worry. All is good here. Stay at work.

I chuckled and shook my head before looking around the office, seeing that most of the cubicles were empty. I hadn’t even noticed how much time had passed. Trevor left about an hour ago. He seemed to be in foul spirits since my birthday last week, and although I wondered what had happened, I told myself I didn’t know him well enough to ask. I hated it when strangers pried into my life. No way I’d want to make him even more upset by nosing around. I respected him too much.

And…I would very much like to get to know him on a deeper level. We’d been going out to lunch fairly often until recently, and I’d thought after my birthday he would finally make a move. I definitely noticed the way he’d been looking at me, and the way he’d touched my shoulder softly or praised me for the work I did. But ever since my birthday, he mostly seemed irritated and had practically glued himself to his computer. At least, he’d said goodbye to me tonight and wished me a nice weekend, so hopefully, it was nothing.

I rubbed my eyes and concentrated on the spreadsheet in front of me. These numbers were definitely something I needed to inform a superior on. They made absolutely no sense. There were some basic accounting errors, but beneath the obvious stuff was a trend I’d recognized about an hour ago. I stood up from my desk, peeking around a corner and finding a janitor vacuuming the carpet. Obviously, he wouldn’t be helpful.

That’s when I saw the light coming from Dustin’s office. I groaned, looking up at the ceiling and asking myself, why me? Why was it always me getting the shitty end of the stick? But it needed to be done. I needed to talk to someone about this.

Might as well get it over with.

I straightened my back and held my head high as I strode towards his office. After two light taps of my knuckles on his door, I waited for his deep voice to say, “Come in.”

I steeled myself, opening the door and watching him tap away on his keyboard. His gaze remained glued to the screen.

“What is it?” he asked, not bothering to look my way.

“I found an abnormality in the numbers I thought you should have a look at,” I said, watching his head perk up at the sound of my voice.

His lips twitched upwards into a slow smile, and he stood quickly from his chair. His tie was pulled loose, and his hand moved absently to his neck as if he thought momentarily about straightening it.
