Coreopsis (Coreopsis spp.)

This is a large genus with profuse, yellow, daisylike flowers that attract seed eaters and insects. Pink tickseed (C. rosea), how-ever, has masses of delicate pink-purple flowers in midsummer. Coreopsis are especially attractive when planted with native species such as purple coneflower, aster, and gay-feather.

Zones: 3–9

Height: 6 inches to 3 feet (15.2 cm to 0.9 m), except for C. tripteris at 6 feet (1.8 m)

Blooming season: Late spring through early autumn

Growing specifics: Coreopsis are hardy and easy to grow. Plant in average to rich, moist soil in full sun. Pink tickseed requires more moisture than other varieties, though all coreopsis will tolerate drought conditions. Plants may self-sow if they are not deadheaded.
