In view of these, it becomes apparent that Heidegger’s endeavor to dissociate understanding from language is artificial. If we renounce this artificial dissociation, however, we have to accept that, because understanding is structured by discourse, the world is disclosed in understanding through language and as language. Heidegger himself seems to reach this conclusion after the Kehre.

Ten years after the publication of the “Origin of the Work of Art,” Heidegger takes the step and argues explicitly that the world is disclosed not only in language but also as language. In “What Are Poets For?” Heidegger writes,

The nature of language does not exhaust itself in signifying, nor is it merely something that has the character of sign or cipher. It is because language is the house of Being, that we reach what is constantly going through this house. When we go to the well, when we go through the woods, we are always already going through the word “well,” through the word “woods,” even if we do not speak the words and do not think of anything relating to language.[7]
