Chapter Seven

Pete was in the hangar, replacing a bracket on the two seat ultra-light plane when his phone rang.

“Hello.”

“Pete, it’s Damian. I need the ten seat plane ready, the team has been called on a mission.”

“Oh, okay.” Pete was already going through his mind what he needed to do.

“Everyone will be here within a half hour,” Damian said.

“No problem, it’ll be ready,” Pete said.

Pete looked at his phone and saw that Damian had ended the call. Before his eyes the screen lit up again.

“Hello,” he answered.

“I’m going on my first rescue, pretty Pete.” The excitement in Gabriel’s voice was catching.

“Congratulations, Gabriel. I know you’ll do well,” Pete said. “What’s the rescue?”

“We’re going to California and help evacuate people and animals out of the way of those three huge fires that are burning out there.”

Pete’s heart skipped a beat. Fires were unpredictable. “Promise me you’ll be careful, Gabriel. I need you to come home to me.” Crap, he couldn’t believe he said that out loud. Then he decided he didn’t care, something inside of him only felt at peace when Gabriel was close.

“I’ll come home to you, pretty Pete,” Gabriel promised.

An hour later Pete stood in the doorway, shoulders slumped, and watched the airplane take Gabriel away.
