Chapter Seven

Daylight was beginning to fade, but Freddy needed to fly, needed to feel the wind pummeling his face as he soared high above the town. Flinging the balcony doors wide, Freddy inhaled the cold air, scenting fresh snow, feeling an overwhelming sense of excitement as he shifted into his feathered form. His eagle gave a low, echoing call as he hopped onto the rail, gripping with his long razor-sharp talons.

Lifting off, he gave a few powerful flaps of his wings, gaining height rapidly until Sage was a mere speck on the landscape, the Grand Tetons sprawled out to the west, and a myriad of rivers and small lakes dotting the terrain. He headed toward the mountains, instinctively using the eddies in the air currents to gain even more altitude. The ranch, with its schools, cottages, and the sports complex, which in total covered half of Two Spirit’s ten-thousand-acre range. Freddy let out another cry as he flew toward the waning sunlight. He practiced some moves, stooping at high speed, skimming sheer rock faces made of granite beneath a thick fall of snow. At the last second, when it seemed inevitable that he would crash, he pulled up and snatched a plump rabbit from the ground, almost invisible wearing its winter coat.

Landing on a rocky outcrop, Freddy ripped the rabbit apart, using claws and beak to shred flesh, plucking fur from the carcass before tucking into the gory meal. Sated, he left the bones and remaining corpse for the carrion crows and other scavengers and took flight again.

Something caught his eye, the glint of sun on metal, and he homed in curiously. Alarmed as he realized what the thing was, he tried to backtrack, but flew right into the hunter’s line of sight. The bullet that raked his breast traveled on, punching a hole in his wing, causing him to stutter and fall, his wing broken. Fluttering desperately, he landed with a thump, then shrieked in terror as a net landed over him. He was trapped. Before he could catch a breath, he was lifted carelessly by his feet, upended until his stomach threatened to belch out his recent meal, and then carted off, bouncing uncomfortably, his wing aching like a bitch.
