‘YOU’RE SUBSTITUTE TONIGHT,’ Settembrini told Roy after a gentle morning training session at the Tynecaster training complex.

‘What game?’ Roy asked, puzzled.

There was only one game scheduled for tonight and that was Tynecaster United first team versus Lobo Antunes FC of Portugal in the Champions’ League. No Under-18s. No development squad. No behind-closed-doors friendlies.

‘That game,’ Settembrini grinned. ‘You say you want to prove you are a player. So, you prove it, maybe?’

Roy couldn’t believe it: he might be about to make his Champions League debut!

So, when he walked into the dressing room that evening, he attempted to wear an expression that looked confident, even cocky. You had to pretend you were something you were not at Tynecaster, he had discovered. If everyone else wore a disinterested expression all the time, he figured he ought to do the same to fit in.

The French international – Guy de Flaubert, holder of a World Cup winners’ medal – was the only person in the dressing room, busy spraying his leg with something in an aerosol can and swearing under his breath.

He looked up as Roy entered.

‘Look at your face, boy!’ he said. ‘You maybe need to lavatory? Yes? Nervous maybe? I am not surprised if you are nervous. But this match… it does not matter. We have already topped our group. Lobo Antunes FC? They are eliminated. This is a dead match. It means nothing. This is why you play.’

Roy said thank you to Guy de Flaubert. Though he wasn’t sure what he was saying thank you for.
