Chapter Twelve
Multiculturalism in
League with Political Correctness
Ever since the rise of the Civil Rights movement, there has been a certain sensitivity that was inculcated in adherents of the movement. This is understandable, and, in many ways, very necessary. The Civil Rights movement, in a sense, was born out of the very real and needed sensitivity to the injustices that were occurring in our society. It was only through the inculcation of sensitivity that greater awareness of these problems, such as racism and bigotry, could be addressed. Yet, four decades later, certain residuals remain of that initial seed of sensitivity, and it has changed shape considerably since its creation.
This certain sensitivity, which, at its root, although very noble, has permeated all facets of society. This movement, known as political correctness, keeps us from responding freely to ourselves and to our very own cultures of origin. The reason that so much of Woody Allenâs humor is effective is that he continuously pokes fun at his own Jewish culture. However, we have gotten to the point where, on some level, it is being frowned upon in our society to poke too much fun at our own culture, let alone the culture of others.
It is a particular travesty that the multiculturalism movement has made it so difficult for us to be honest with ourselves about the shortcomings of culture. Multiculturalism has made culture our new god to which we must show obeisance. Culture is the new untouchable subject, something so sacrosanct that we cannot in any way criticize, lest we be called a racist or bigot. It is seems as though anyone who dares to comment critically and honestly about culture is roundly criticised. The incident when Bill Cosby criticised African American culture brings to mind the quickness with which the Political Correctness police will censor those who speak the truth. There was nothing either racist or bigoted in what Mr. Cosby had to say. Yet, because he was offering constructive criticism of African American culture, he was quickly attacked, mostly by those of his own culture.
It seems as though the Civil Rights movement gave rise to multiculturalism. And multiculturalism gave rise to Political Correctness. There are countless conditions which can no longer be called by common sense terminology. Short people are âvertically-challenged.â Bald people are âfollically-challenged.â It seems that there was virtually no nook or cranny into which the PC authorities werenât looking into the attempt at slapping wrists for supposedly âracistâ or âsexistâ remarks. Even the Bible could not escape this trend. We can no longer say that somebody was âstoned,â for that might imply that somebody in Ancient Israel was smoking weed. The quotations from the Almighty were called into question. It was criticised for the usage of the generic male pronoun âHe.â It was felt that this was chauvinistic, and that it represented two thousand years of oppressive male iconography, especially in the Old Testament. It clearly escaped the minds of the Political Correctness elites that the usage of the male pronoun was merely intended for convenience.
