Chapter Six

NATHAN AND I GO HOME together for Thanksgiving weekend the week after that. It’s been strained between us. He knows something’s wrong—has tried to ask me a few times, even—but I can’t tell him anything. I’m doing my best to be normal, to feel normal, but it’s difficult.

Thanksgiving is normally an understated affair with my family. We don’t really do anything special, but my brother Luke is coming home this time, so mom wanted us all together. Soupy, my teammate, says we don’t do anything fun for Thanksgiving because we’re celebrating ‘Fake Thanksgiving’. He’s American, though, so I guess I can forgive him for thinking Thanksgiving is in November instead of October.

Nathan and I live in the same cul-de-sac. He lives four houses down from me, so his mom, Evelyn, had picked us up from the GO Station. Evelyn is practically like my second mom. She’s my mom’s best friend, just like my dad’s best friend is Nathan’s dad. Just like Luke’s best friend is Nathan’s brother, David, and my sister Christa’s best friend is Nathan’s little sister, Shannon.

Five sets of best friends all together.

And here I go, ruining it with my feelings.

At least I didn’t have to spend time with Nathan this weekend. Though, the alternative isn’t really the greatest, either.

Don’t get me wrong. I love my family. Christa is my favorite person in the world. She’s only nine, but sometimes she acts like she’s twenty-nine. She’s incredibly smart for her age, and I’m a proud big brother.

Luke is my hero. He always has been. He’s four years older than I am, and even though we haven’t lived in the same house in a long time, he’s still my brother, the one I constantly look up to. He’s in his first year of medicine at the University of Vancouver. It’s good to see him again.

Mostly.

It would be nice if I didn’t get compared to him all the time, that’s all. My parents are in my room, discussing my grades with me. My two siblings—both geniuses in their own right—and then, there’s me.

Luke is on his way to being a doctor. I can’t even pass fucking first year Calculus.

“You need to try harder, Liam,” my dad says. I want to tell him that I am, that I’m doing my best, but I know it won’t help. They love me, I know. But to them, I’m just their slacker middle son.

They’re not even angry. They’re not yelling at me—they never have. They’re disappointed. It’s worse. I wish they’d yell at me, instead.

“Maybe you should consider transferring to Hamilton College next semester, son,” Mom says. “Just so you can catch up.”

Hamilton College is notorious for being easy. They’re also notorious for having a shit hockey program. I shake my head. “No, I can’t. I like TU. I like my hockey team, I like the school...I just have to try harder. I will,” I say. I can’t transfer there.

“Well, maybe it’s time to reconsider hockey, then, honey,” Mom says. What? Reconsider hockey? Is she kidding?

“I know you love hockey, but your Mom is right.
