âGoddammit!â I slammed the colander into the sink with all the spilled pasta. âI canât do anything right!â With frustrated tears in my eyes, I started to pick up the pieces. It was a metaphor for my life anymore. Picking up the pieces. I gave up trying. There were too many pieces â another metaphor. I started weeping over the kitchen sink, feeling like a fool.
In moments, Gunter, my steady rock of a man lately, was behind me with his arms wrapped around my middle. He lightly kissed my neck and shoulder. âShh. Sure you can, Chloe. Things will fall back into place, sugar, youâll see. Itâs gonna take time is all.â
My heart broke open and I turned around to bury my face in his solid chest. I cried my eyes out, clinging to him with all my hurt on my back and in my head. âI just want it to go away!â I cried. âI just donât want to feel it anymore! Iâm so tired of being sad!â
âI know, baby, I know.â Gunter smoothed the hair on my temple and continued to hold me. âWhat can I do for you? You want some pasta? You want me to make you some?â
âWhy canât I just be normal? Why canât I just be happy and appreciate what I have?â
âYou do appreciate it. I know you do. Youâre just struggling right now. Youâll come out of it.â
I wept on, feeling like my chest was caving in from the pressure of helplessness. I wept until I had nothing left. And still Gunter held me. He held me until I was sniffling and numb.
âIâm sorry,â I finally said. âIâm trying.â
âNothing to be sorry for.â
âThank you for being patient.â I rubbed his back, my head still against his chest.
âYouâre welcome, honey. Itâs not really patience, though. You know what it is?â He tilted my face up to look at him. âItâs love. Okay? Iâm here for you. Itâs not an exercise in patience. Itâs just love. Plain and simple. I want to be here. Okay?â
My heart healed just a little bit with his words. It was moments like those that kept my heart beating, in fact. Without them, I would have drowned already. âOkay,â I said quietly.
âYou want some pasta now? I can throw a little onion and garlic in there. A little oregano?â
âAnd some tomatoes?â
âOf course. Anything your little heart desires.â He kissed me softly, not pressing, just expressing his support. âNow you just relax. Let me spoil you. Let me put a smile on that pretty face.â
I felt like a child, walking back to the bar to sit at my laptop and watch Gunter clean up my mess. âIâm sorry, Gunter. Thank you.â
He looked over with a smile and a wink just for me. Yes, he was indeed my rock. I watched his hands while he worked to please me. It sent a twinge of lust through me. I bit my lip and looked back at my laptop, trying not to think of sex.
