“Goddammit!” I slammed the colander into the sink with all the spilled pasta. “I can’t do anything right!” With frustrated tears in my eyes, I started to pick up the pieces. It was a metaphor for my life anymore. Picking up the pieces. I gave up trying. There were too many pieces – another metaphor. I started weeping over the kitchen sink, feeling like a fool.

In moments, Gunter, my steady rock of a man lately, was behind me with his arms wrapped around my middle. He lightly kissed my neck and shoulder. “Shh. Sure you can, Chloe. Things will fall back into place, sugar, you’ll see. It’s gonna take time is all.”

My heart broke open and I turned around to bury my face in his solid chest. I cried my eyes out, clinging to him with all my hurt on my back and in my head. “I just want it to go away!” I cried. “I just don’t want to feel it anymore! I’m so tired of being sad!”

“I know, baby, I know.” Gunter smoothed the hair on my temple and continued to hold me. “What can I do for you? You want some pasta? You want me to make you some?”

“Why can’t I just be normal? Why can’t I just be happy and appreciate what I have?”

“You do appreciate it. I know you do. You’re just struggling right now. You’ll come out of it.”

I wept on, feeling like my chest was caving in from the pressure of helplessness. I wept until I had nothing left. And still Gunter held me. He held me until I was sniffling and numb.

“I’m sorry,” I finally said. “I’m trying.”

“Nothing to be sorry for.”

“Thank you for being patient.” I rubbed his back, my head still against his chest.

“You’re welcome, honey. It’s not really patience, though. You know what it is?” He tilted my face up to look at him. “It’s love. Okay? I’m here for you. It’s not an exercise in patience. It’s just love. Plain and simple. I want to be here. Okay?”

My heart healed just a little bit with his words. It was moments like those that kept my heart beating, in fact. Without them, I would have drowned already. “Okay,” I said quietly.

“You want some pasta now? I can throw a little onion and garlic in there. A little oregano?”

“And some tomatoes?”

“Of course. Anything your little heart desires.” He kissed me softly, not pressing, just expressing his support. “Now you just relax. Let me spoil you. Let me put a smile on that pretty face.”

I felt like a child, walking back to the bar to sit at my laptop and watch Gunter clean up my mess. “I’m sorry, Gunter. Thank you.”

He looked over with a smile and a wink just for me. Yes, he was indeed my rock. I watched his hands while he worked to please me. It sent a twinge of lust through me. I bit my lip and looked back at my laptop, trying not to think of sex.
