DEFUND THE POLICE ON TWITTER

DOI: 10.4324/9781003224440-3

Introduction

Due to a series of tragic and high-profile cases regarding the deaths of unarmed black Americans at the hands of police over the years, especially with the more recent examples of 2020, protesting has increased, and the calls to defund the police have become prominent. Protesting to demonstrate this demand has led to violence and an increased distrust and hatred of police. Not only has such protesting taken to the streets, but social justice seekers using social media, especially Twitter, have played a prominent role in how the nation responds to public concerns about policing in the United States, leading some to call for “defunding” the police. While the calls to defund the police during 2020 progressed, societal perceptions of what this phrase really meant were highly mixed. The public has interpreted the call to defund the police in a variety of ways, with some of these definitions in clear contrast with one another, creating unclear discourse about a topic due to definitions that are not universally shared among all discussants. In this chapter, we identify several ways in which #DefundThePolice was constructed by Twitter users, hoping to shed light on the variations in use.
