Do You Want to Sue?

The second Christine left the room, I sent a text to Charlie. A million thoughts were racing through my head, most of them some variation of why? I had barely been there a day, and they already had a reason to send me home?

I started pulling clothes from the closet, jamming as many as possible into the case before going through to the bathroom and shoving as many of those as could in too — a petty move but those bastards deserved it.

The look on Chrissie’s face when she told me “my services were no longer required for the trip” had made my blood boil. She didn’t even have the nerve to look apologetic; she just looked down her nose at me and spouted off about how I would be reimbursed my trip back to New York, and I had until the rest of the day left to pack up and get out.

I climbed up onto the bed and sat on the case, yanking the zipper as hard as I could. My phone rang. It was Charlie.

“I just got your text; what the fuck happened?”

“They fired me is what happened, two hours before we’re set to cast off or whatever.” The zipper didn’t give, just bit into my fingers until they turned white from the effort. “I can’t even steal all the free shit they gave me. It won’t go in the case.”

“But what happened? You are the most qualified person I know… You didn’t piss off the client, did you?”

“I haven’t said a single goddamn word to him!” My voice caught in my throat. I could feel the prickle of tears swimming in the corners of my eyes. I collapsed backwards onto the bed.

“What am I going to do, Char? This was my last chance. Nowhere else is going to offer money like this — oh god, I’m going to be homeless! I’ll never get Dad’s house back.” The weight of that thought came crashing down like a bomb. There was nowhere else I could go; Charlie was moving back in with her family, and I had no other friends and no family to speak of… There was no way out. Ugly sobs fell from my mouth and I curled in on myself, clutching the phone like a lifeline.

“Darling, you can stay with me until we figure something out, okay?” Charlie’s voice was soothing and achingly familiar and it just made me cry harder, sobbing into my hand to stifle the noise.

“But I can’t ask you to do that! You’re going back to Monica, and she lives in that tiny house — I can’t Char.” My words were garbled through near-hysterical tears. I hated getting like this, angry crying was the most useless way of dealing with things.

“Josie. Josie, it’s fine. You’re my best friend; of course, I’m going to help you out. What do you take me for, huh?” There was a gentle teasing in her tone but I could hear the strain in her voice — she was just as pissed off as I was.
