Chapter 14

Gideon

“Okay, it’s been a month now since our heat cycles ended and we’ve been here sponging off Beau for over two months. I can’t deal, Gid. I can’t. I know you’re digging this whole little houseboy gig, but I need to work. I want to get another job. Are you in, or should I find one of my own for now? I’m not saying we have to leave here, but I’d like to know that we have options if things go south with Beau.”

I glanced up from my shopping list and took a drink of tea. My stomach had been queasy lately and only the mint tea seemed to be helping. Lucas was tapping the fingers of one hand on the table while dragging a wedge of toast through what was left of his runny egg yolk with the other.

“Lukey. If you want to get a job, then get one. But I don’t want to get one right now. I’m too afraid after what happened last time. Not only did I have to dodge our boss groping me, but I almost got raped just taking out the trash. I’m sorry, but I’m not ready.”

Beau walked in as I said that and silently squeezed the back of my neck with a calming touch before walking over to pour himself a fresh cup of coffee.

He’d had to miss breakfast with us because he’d gone out to meet Dallas instead. That made me happy. I was glad to see our alpha reconnecting with his family.

It made me sad that the brothers had drifted apart. One day I’d figure out why and see if I could help. Families should stick together… unless you came from a bad family; in that case, running was sometimes best.

Run far, and run fast. That’s what we’d done.

I smiled up at Beau from under my lashes as I dipped my head back down to my list when he sat down at the table between us. I loved how safe he made me feel with just the touch of his hand.

Beau’s touch was nothing at all like the other alphas who’d tried to hurt me and steal something from me that wasn’t theirs to take. Our alpha wasn’t like that. No. He was everything that was good and safe and kind. And best of all, he was ours to keep.

“Lukas, if you want to get another job then I’d be happy to take you out to pick up a few applications this afternoon. But I have one request before we do that.” Beau spoke casually, but his eyes were guarded.

I looked up curiously as Lukas replied. “Sure, Beau. What’s up?”

Beau looked nervously down at the table before glancing back at Lukas with a hopeful glint in his eyes. “I want you to take a pregnancy test first. Both of you,” he added as his gaze slid in my direction. “It could… I mean… I was thinking it could be an issue after last month, right? It’s better safe than sorry.
