CHAPTER EIGHT

Eliot stirred stiffly in the aircraft seat, the memory of Julia and the present — which was her absence — suddenly collided and she shivered. She tried in vain to push away a sudden and unmistakable sense of foreboding that enfolded her along with her return to the moment. Even as she struggled to shrug off the unfamiliar weight of dread, her thoughts lurched back and forth between the extraordinary happiness she had experienced so briefly after those strange days at the beach house and the even more extraordinary pessimism and dull pain that were, with each passing mile and minute, slowly overwhelming her. The conflicting wrenches on her emotions would soon, she felt sure, begin to make her physically ill. She pressed the Call button and ordered a large scotch with plenty of ice from the solicitous flight attendant.

“I’ll remember this sky.” Julia’s tone had been neutral as they lay loosely entwined, watching the black silhouettes and the glowing arc that was the New York night sky. Eliot glanced at her, inscrutable in candle-lit profile. She was certain Julia was talking about more than the twinkling universe beyond the plate glass, but could not think of a way to acknowledge it. Instead she kissed the corner of Julia’s mouth and asked, “What will be your schedule for the next few weeks?”

Julia shuddered at the intrusion of reality and sighed. “Train, coaching, practice. Small tournament in a couple of weeks. Maybe an exhibition match. See how I go, talk to people, see what they reckon. Train, coaching, practice, take it as fast as the knee will go. Aim for a couple of easy ones; if that goes okay, then start to crank it up and go for broke.”

‘Wimbledon?”

“Might as well. It’s the one I want. It’s the one I was aiming for anyway. No point dodging around the ridges.”

Eliot lifted Julia’s hand away from where it lay cupped on her breast and kissed each knuckle. “I think you’re brave.”

Julia snorted. “Brave! Nah. What else am I going to do? Bravery is when you’ve got choices and you make the hard one. For me, to play is the easy route. To make another decision — go another road — that’ll be brave. Believe me.”

Eliot slid her hand along Julia’s thigh to caress the scarred knee with her fingers. “You’re very tough on yourself.”

Julia grinned. “I have to be if I want to win.” And the expression in her eyes told Eliot she was not necessarily thinking of battles on the tennis court.

But Eliot couldn’t begin to acknowledge what this wild, ruthless and resourceful creature might really have in mind. Instead she sidestepped her suspicions by lowering her mouth to Julia’s quiescent right nipple and teasing it into life with the tip of her tongue. It was, she had already and quickly learned, an extraordinarily gratifying thing to do and, with only vestiges of her earlier nervousness, she began to deliberately and slowly relish the sensations of limitless power that came from pleasuring Julia.
