A MANAGERIAL CAREER

The manager generally is male—in fact, less than 10 per cent of managerial personnel are female. In tracing the successful managerial career in a large company, a common pattern emerges.

In his twenties the new employee formally enters the company on 1 April, welcomed under an elaborate rite of passage lasting for several days, At this point, he is recognized as a shakai-jin, or fully-fledged, responsible adult member of society. For at least several months his initial training will be at the most basic level of operations. This means that in a manufacturing company he may be placed on the production line, and in a bank he may be given the duty of collecting deposits door to door. Every two or three years he can expect to be moved between departments and sections under titles such as senior clerk or first-line supervisor (shunin).

In his mid-thirties he is promoted to kakari-chô (sub-section chief), and a few years later to ka-chô (section chief). Promotions at this time serve to recognize the responsibility for coordinating different tasks.

In his late-forties he is promoted to bu-chô (department head) at least twice, first in one and then in another department, the second being of greater importance.

In his mid-fifties he receives the title of torishimari-yaku (director), indicating that in addition to his operational responsibilities he is recognized as a member of top management. Like all other regular employees, he receives his separation allowance when giving up his position as bu-chô at the mandatory age limit. He now participates as a full-time member of the Board of Directors. Two university graduates’ successful careers in manufacturing of university graduates are outlined in Table 6.2.
