I laid awake most of the night thinking about Tom but found no answers. I’d texted him to check in, but he didn’t respond.

If I asked Barry what to do, he’d tell me to give him space, and as much as I hated focusing on anything else when my brothers were obviously hurting, I knew that I wouldn’t get anything out of him until he was ready to talk to me.

Instead, I focused on the next thing on my calendar—the annual marketing conference.

With everything going on, I’d almost forgotten, but once I saw that it was coming up, I knew it was the perfect distraction. This event was huge. All of the greatest minds in marketing would be there talking upcoming trends and strategies for the next year.

I’d gone with Caroline last year after much pleading. I was still new to my position, and I was well aware I would never be able to present, then or now, considering I’d need a company to sponsor me.

I was fine with simply attending. I’d at least gotten Caroline to approve that many months ago.

But with her retirement, I wasn’t sure if her approval stood.

Technically, Charles or Dave were the point of contact in the VP’s absence. Between the two, I figured Dave would be easier to convince.

And yet, the man frowned at me when I brought it up to him.

“You want to go to this . . . AMC?”

“I went last year,” I said. “It’s where I got the idea for the campaign that boosted revenue.”

“And we’ve already paid for the tickets?”

“Yes,” I said. “And we have hotel reservations.”

Dave frowned. “And Caroline was fine with this? We’re tight on money, Ruth.”

Were we? Knox’s presence had made over a thousand new customers sign up for services. The snack closet was still fully stocked.

“We only paid for the first day of the conference to save money. It’s important for me to go if you want me to keep revenue up.”

“It’s not you who is keeping it up.”

“It’s Knox, and my marketing plan,” I reminded.

“You’re right about one of those things,” he muttered. “Fine, you can go.”

“Thank you, I’m so—”

“But you need supervision.” Dave’s eyes moved to the hallway. “Knox!” he called. I turned to see Knox had been walking past the door, probably en route either to his own office or to the break room. I wondered how many times he’d been pulled into Dave’s office this exact way.

“Yes?” he asked. His eyes lingered on mine, as if he was trying to work out how this conversation was going by my facial expression alone.

“There’s this . . . marketing conference. Has Ruth told you about it?”

“Of course,” he said, smiling as if I’d actually told him. “It’s really important to her.”

I’d never admit it out loud, but Knox Price was my favorite person in that moment.

“Here’s the thing,” Dave added, “I want to be sure Ruth makes us look good.”

“I can assure you she will.”

“Yeah, yeah, professionally and all, but you would add even more to the event.
