“This doesn't scare me away from you, Travis,” Nola insisted, wrapping her arms around him.

“I'm not a naïve person. I know there's hate in the world. I know there's violence. I know that just because you've come from that kind of past, it doesn't change the man you are today. You are loving, caring, protective, and hard working. I never would have guessed any of this based on the way you carry yourself.”

“That means everything, love.” He kissed the top of her head. “I think Ava feared me becoming that man sometimes especially when she saw what I did to your father at first, but I also feared she couldn't handle living here and that she'd want to return home.”

Nola had a feeling he had so much more story to tell, but for now, this was enough. He'd opened up a part of his heart, revealing a history no doubt he wasn't proud of. “Daddy was a good judge of character. He must have trusted you with everything if he brought you around.”

“He had his doubts at first, all things considered, but I worked hard to be the man he hoped I'd be. I owe everything to him, Nola. I'm failing miserably with his legacy, and it haunts me.”

“Travis, no. You're doing a wonderful job. It's not easy to fill someone's shoes, but you,” she cupped his face in her hands, planting gentle kisses along his jaw, “are doing the best you can.”

He threaded his fingers through her hair, staring at her intently in the low light. “Don't let what I've told you set you back, Nola. I will never hurt you. I will never let anyone hurt you.”

She held him close, taking in his warmth. “I know,” she whispered. “I have no doubts when it comes to you. You're my safe place. My shelter.”

They sat like that for what felt like eternity, silently taking comfort in each other's arms.

“So, skinny dipping with Dirk at thirteen, huh?”

Nola giggled. “You're stuck on that?”

“Getting naked with a boy. At thirteen.” He shook his head.

“You're jealous,” Nola stated.

“Jealous? Of Dirk?”

“You are! Every time I'm around him, you have this possessive look!”

“I am not jealous of Dirk, love.”

“No?”

“No, but I am jealous he saw you naked first,” Travis growled playfully.

“Don't worry. I didn't have all of the curves and boobs I do now. Besides, I think he tried to keep his eyes closed. We were playing truth or dare, and let me tell you, that boy was awkward around girls.” She toyed with his earlobe. “You could see me naked. Any time you're ready.”
