Chapter Nine

Brian was sick, Marcus was stressed, Simon had found not only his mate, but a beautiful little girl to make a family. Hayley had been kidnapped by her maternal grandparents. Thankfully, Alex and Simon had managed to track her down and bring her home again. Tomorrow was the full moon and the pack would be gathering, but tonight Rick just wanted to drown his sorrows. His entire bloody family had found their happy endings. All except him. His would never come because his mate didn't want him.

Rick threw back another shot of whatever the hell it was he was drinking. He'd forgotten a long time ago. His brain had long since clouded over with the effects of the alcohol. He'd been hit on all night, but he'd turned each and every one of them away so far, not drunk enough to do anything yet.

He knew his family was worried about him and how much he'd been drinking of late, but Rick didn't know of any other way to numb the pain inside him. He would be open to suggestions, but he couldn't tell them why. Rick didn't know why after all these years he was still keeping Jake's secret. It would make things a whole lot easier, he supposed, if he just let everything out in the open. Rick couldn't bring himself to break a promise he'd made to his mate, though. It just wasn't who he was.

He was seriously considering leaving town. Maybe another trip to see Jaxx was in order. Rick shook his head, if he did that, he'd just get his friend's happiness thrown in his face instead of his brothers' and Rick couldn't deal with that.

Maybe he just needed to load up his Jeep and drive, get away from everything. Seeing Jake on a regular basis at his home and at pack functions was getting to be more than he could handle.

Rick was thankful Shaun wasn't working tonight, otherwise he would have been cut off a long time ago. Instead he waved to the young woman currently serving and ordered another drink.
